Martin Luther:

Luther allegedly confronted the devil in his study.

Catholic monk, Johann Tetzel (pictured below), prompted Luther to nail the 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenburg. This symbolic event was credited with the beginning of the numerous Protestant defections from the Catholic Church.

The indulgence box (above right) contained printed certificates that reduced time spent in purgatory for sins. Stealing from the church would cost one seven ducats. Murder would cost one eight ducats. Teztel also suggested that contributions could also reduce the time in purgatory for dead relatives.

This woodcut (c. 1545) is an example of the concrete visual material that reformers used to influence the public.

Question:

Compare and contrast the differences between Protestantism under Martin Luther (left)
and Roman Catholocism (right) featuring Johann Tetzel.
