The conclusion drawn by Malthus and other economic thinkers earned the label of "dismal science" due to the unfortunate predictions made about society. In An Essay on the Principle of Population, Malthus argued that poverty, famine, and misery were unavoidable because population increases were faster than the growth of food supplies.
