Spread of the Protestant Reformation

Swiss Reformation:
- Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531): Began reformation in Zurich
- Abolished: relics, decor, Mass, music, monasticism, pilgrimages, pope's authority
- Swiss civil war (1531) resulted in Zwingli's death

The Anabaptists ("Rebaptists"):
- Rejected state role in church affairs
- Voluntary association: adult baptism
- Equal followers chose minister
- Refusal to hold office/bear arms

Calvinism:
- John Calvin (1509-64): Predestination
- Salvation tests: open profession of faith; decent/godly life; baptism/communion participation (no certainty of salvation)
- Geneva: theocracy of clergy/laymen
Consistory: moral discipline court
- Calvinism: international form of Protestantism
