Ricardo's "Iron Law of Wages" asserted that rapid population growth would lead to fierce competition for jobs, lower wages, and higher unemployment. The working class could expect poverty. He was opposed to government aid to the poor. He believed that the poor could help themselves by working hard, saving earnings, and having fewer children.
