Adam Smith:

Adam Smith promoted the idea of laissez-faire economics (allowing businesses to operate without government interference). In The Wealth of Nations, he stated that economies operate best when the natural forces of supply and demand are not subject to government intervention. Smith asserted that individuals acting in their own interests would benefit the common good. Efficient producers would make more profit, hire more workers, and continue to expand. Consumers would in turn get the best goods at the lowest prices.
