Neville Chamberlain may not be the moron he is often made out to be for his acquiescence to Adolf Hitler. British military commanders briefed him before the Munich Conference that their military was in a sad state of affairs. Until more advanced fighter planes such as the Spitfire and the Hurricane were built, Great Briain had little chance of resisting the Germans from an air assault. Chamberlain was aware that Hitler's claims of no further territorial demands were a farce. He simply had to buy adequate time for the British military to build its defenses, including the protective radar coverage along the coastline. By the time the Nazis invaded Poland, the British were in far better shape due to the "diplomatic delay" on behalf of Chamberlain. It should also be noted that Winston Churchill kept Chamberlain as a close advisor throughout World War II.
